Hero ranking

Overview

Fortnite’s Hero Rank in Chapter 6 Season 3 (“Super”) is a match-based progression system where you start each game at Rank C and climb through B, A, S, and S+. As your rank increases, the intensity of your Boons improves and you also gain the ability to unlock doors in Academy Tech Labs, granting access to high-tier Hero Caches, Hero Items, and Unstable Exotics.

 Highlights

  • Leveraged the same quest technology used in Nitro Drome to use Data Registries to add new reactions from outside plugins and have flexibility on what we can detect (any of the actions already detected by quests with the option to add our own ones).
  • Made the point/rank implementation from scratch, letting you scale it based on the number of squad members in a playlist.
  • Implemented external point multipliers, so features like Spires could push-and pop them based on their needs.

Impact

Hero Ranking was such a core system for the season that we wouldn’t have had time to deal with any tech friction, and we had to make it as hotfixable in live as possible to quickly react to community usage, so we needed to develop a rock solid tech base to fulfill those objectives.

  • Due to the technical solidity of the feature, it was quickly repurposed for Blitz Royale, with a completely new set of point-acquiring actions with very little turnaround time and almost no support needed from our team.
  • Also as a result of how reliable the tech ended up, the team was able to develop and support the feature in a fraction of time compared to other features, letting us have extra time to develop other features further

Spires

Overview

Overlord Spires and Scout Spires are special dynamic boss encounters introduced in Chapter 6 Season 3.

  • The Overlord Spire is a large, floating boss that appears randomly each match and requires players to destroy  weak points before its core becomes vulnerable.
  • Scout Spires are smaller spire bosses—usually about five per match—that are easier to destroy and only have one primary weak point on their core.

Highlights

  • Collaborated with the AI team to migrate/merge the Level Injection tech we had used to spawn the MMO island to another existing toolkit so we could use the perf budgeting capabilities it had, which allowed us to balance out the number of dynamic map features in different areas of the map.
    •  Added new functionality to support reveal mechanics and be able to control/hotfix selection of locations via EQS + independent spawn timing as those features were not present in the system we migrated to.
  • Oversaw all of the dynamic map features that were released this season (Overlord Spires, Scout Spires, Academy Tech Labs, Kor’s Floating Island) and worked with the different teams for these features to guide them on the implementation stage, make sure different map features wouldn’t overlap in a certain area and to define best practices to make these types of features in the future
  • Collaborated with external teams to bring Overlord and Scout Spires to other environments like Fortnite Expeditions at nearly the same time as in BR, while minimizing risk

Impact

  • With the introduction of so many dynamic map features this season, we pushed the tech even further, combining it with other existing systems to evolve it to be more of an evergreen system.
  • This season was a good opportunity to define good practices and workflows to be used moving forward so the development of similar features is more streamlined.
